The #1 question that people ask us about our line of unique decorative hardware is, "How did you come up with this idea?".

Which brings us back to a sweet day, a sweet memory and the beginning of our company. It happened like this:

We were newlyweds and had just moved into our first apartment together. The place was a little beat up, but we called it home. We owned a small jewelry company together and were saving for a REAL house, so we decided that we weren't going to put too much money into this place...after all, it was a rental and all of our improvements were only going to benefit someone else's property value.

But the kitchen, well...we had to do something! So, what about some faux finishing on the cabinets - his idea. I liked that. When it was done and time to reaffix the old knobs we asked ourselves: the old ones, or should we buy something new - something that would do this beautiful paint job some justice. "O.K", I said, "new, but what?"

"What if you were to design something different, something like your jewelry line?", he said. "Hmm.", I said, "Jewelry for cabinets....I like that. I think I'll do that for the rest of my life."

And so it goes...

Emtek is dedicated to bringing interesting, well made hardware back into American homes. Until about 1930 there was a proud history of hardware in America. Hundreds of small factories made an enormous variety of creatively designed products. Craftsmen from many disciplines devoted their energies to making locks that provided both function and beauty.

Unfortunately, during the depression many of these factories failed, and then during WWII brass became scarce and lock designs were reduced to the bare essentials. In more recent years the emphasis on cheap, high volume building products has discouraged manufacturers from re-introducing well made hardware.

But now these ideas are changing, Americans are re-discovering the satisfaction that comes from owning well designed products. Emtek's mission is to make it possible for home owners to apply these higher expectations to door locks. Rocky Mountain Hardware began as a family owned distributor and showroom for other manufacturers' architectural hardware. Over time they began to notice a gap in the market, both in terms of style and the quality of the hardware's operation. They found that architects, designers, and builders from the upscale Sun Valley, Idaho market were repeatedly asking for something that just didn’t exist.

That was the beginning of custom bronze work by Rocky Mountain Hardware. Whenever a need arose on a project for a particular type of hardware that just couldn't be found, the company created it. This grew into the realization that there was a market for a new line of hardware: a simple, handcrafted look that would work equally as well in a rustic log home, a Mediterranean-style villa, a French country house, or a more contemporary-style project.
